If you’re looking to save money on car insurance, be sure to see if you qualify for each and every discount available to you. You’d be surprised at the number of discounts out there that don’t require you to sacrifice the coverage you need.

We’ve already talked about the good student discount, the good driver discount, the combo discount, and even the hybrid discount, but a lesser known discount comes courtesy of Mercury Insurance.

The car insurance company, which writes much of its insurance in California, has a so-called “Alumni Discount.” In short, if you’re part of an official Alumni group, you may qualify for a 10% discount. You’d just have to let your insurance agent know so they can enter it into your quote.

In short, if you’re part of an alumni association, you’re eligible for a discount on your Mercury car insurance. Especially when you’re comparing two similar companies or you’re on the edge of your budget and you don’t want to cut coverage, every little bit helps.

The alumni discount is around 10%, but be sure to contact your insurance agent for the exact number.

As far as qualification, simple proof of alumni association enrollment in the form of an e-mail or similar seems to be all you need.

If you’re not part of an alumni association yet, it may not be worth it to join one just to get the discount. If there’s no membership fee, of course it makes sense to fill out an application. But first use what you have.

What else can you expect from Mercury Insurance?

Mercury is the third largest private passenger automobile insurer in California, and also writes insurance in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

The company offers homeowners insurance as well, so you may be able to get a 15% combo discount on top of all the discounts mentioned above. Mercury Insurance is commonly sold through independent agents. So when you get a quote for Mercury, independent agents can get you a few other quotes. This way, you can compare your options in seconds and find the best deals.

While each insurance company has its own customer service, the insurance agent you choose will have a big impact on your experience wherever you go. With companies like Mercury, they will be your first point of contact for claims, policy renewals, any major market changes, and much more.

Bonus discount: Members of the California Medical Association (CMA), which is a professional organization representing physicians in California, are also eligible to receive an exclusive 10% discount from Mercury Insurance.

Is Mercury Insurance the right personal auto insurance or business auto insurance provider for you? You can get quotes online for auto insurance policies or through an insurance agent to see.
