What is an FR-44?

An FR-44, sometimes called FR-44 insurance, is not actually insurance. Rather, it is a certificate that proves you hold at least the minimum insurance required by your state.

Moreover, an FR-44 is a certificate of financial responsibility that proves you have the required liability insurance coverage limits after a conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or intoxicants, driving while your driver’s license has been deprived for a conviction, violation of any federal law or law of any other state.

An FR-44 is required by specific states when a driver has been rated as high-risk.

This is similar to the SR-22, which is also required once you have been categorized as a high-risk driver. However, an FR-44 indicates you hold even more than the minimum coverage required.

Car insurance companies provide the FR-44 certificate, but you’re required to have the following minimum requirements of liability coverage on your auto insurance policy.

  • $40,000 of property damage liability
  • $50,000 of bodily injury per person liability
  • $100,000 of bodily injury liability per accident

You’re required to have FR-44 coverage for three consecutive years from the date of your license suspension or conviction. As long as drivers maintain a clean driving record over this period, the FR-44 form will expire after 36 months.

What makes you a high-risk driver?

You can be classified as a high-risk driver for a number of reasons. We’ve listed several of them below:

  • Multiple at-fault accidents
  • DUI/DWI conviction
  • Driving without insurance
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Reckless driving

It should be noted that each state may set its own restrictions. That means that depending on where you live, this list may change.

Which states require an FR-44?

There are only two states that require an FR-44 as opposed to the more common SR-22. These states are Virginia and Florida.

The reasoning behind this is that these two states require you to hold more than the minimum coverage on your vehicle after being classed as a high-risk driver.

Virginia and Florida drivers who are convicted of serious driving violations are asked to file an FR-44 form. This represents proof of insurance coverage that meets the state minimum car insurance requirements. Note that FR-44 car insurance is required for drivers that are convicted of DUI/DWI.

An insurance provider can file an FR-44 form on your behalf for a fee. FR-44 insurance cost is higher than a standard policy because an insurance carrier sees these drivers as high-risk to insure.

How much does an FR-44 cost?

Filing an FR-44 is not expensive, usually costing between $10 to $25. However, the incidents which cause you to have to file may cause your insurance rates to go up.

One of the reasons for this is that these events can put others in danger. DUI or DWI, in particular, cause 29 deaths a day, according to the CDC.

There are also some insurance companies that will now offer the amount of liability coverage that is required to qualify for your FR-44.

How do I get FR-44 insurance?

As stated above, an FR-44 is a certificate, not the insurance itself. However many insurance companies will submit for the certification on your behalf and charge you for the submission on your first bill.

To find insurance companies that will provide coverage, you want to look for providers who offer high-risk coverage. One of the biggest things to keep in mind when getting this type of insurance is to shop around.

Make sure to get multiple quotes for a variety of large and small car insurance companies in your area.

As we mentioned above, once you are required to get an FR-44, you may have been in several accidents, gotten tickets, or been involved in other incidents.

These events naturally raise your insurance rates. This makes finding affordable car insurance more difficult.

Insurance quotes and the resulting rates are very dependent upon individual situations, so the more quotes you get, the more likely you will get the right insurance policy for you.
