Speeding Tickets and Insurance

Ever wonder how much that speeding ticket will set you back when it comes time to pay your car insurance?
Well, a new Insurance.com analysis of more than 32,000 car insurance policies sold in 2010 found that drivers with one violation on their driving record who bought a one-car, single-driver policy paid an average of 18 percent more than those with no violations.
That’s right, the average annual car insurance premium for a driver with no violations on their record was $1,119, while it was $1,318 for those with just a single violation.
(Why do car insurance rates go up?)
For those with three violations on their record, their car insurance rate jumped 53 percent on average to a staggering $1,713.
Here are some violations that can raise your car insurance rate:
- Speeding
- DUI
- Reckless driving
- Running red lights, stop signs
- Failure to use a child restraint
- Improper passing
- Illegal U-turn
So next time you get a speeding ticket, or any moving violation for that matter, know that the buck doesn’t stop with the ticket itself. It’s the gift that keeps giving, year after year.
If you happen to have a speeding ticket (or two) on your record, it’s probably wise to shop your insurance rate by gathering insurance quotes online and speaking to an independent insurance agent.
(Why did my insurance rates go up, no ticket or accident?)
You may find a better deal if you switch insurance companies, as some insurers are more lenient when it comes to moving violations.
Tip: Look into a driver safety course that may qualify you for a car insurance discount.
